If I could hand you only one practice from this mustard chair, it would be 5-4-3-2-1. Not because it is magic. Because it gives the mind a job that is kinder than spinning.
From my chair to yours, I see you trying to think your way out of a feeling. I have tried that too. It is a long hallway with no door. Grounding for anxiety works better when we borrow the senses.
How I learned it in this room
One winter afternoon the worry was a radio I could not find the dial for. I sat down, held the teal fringe, and named five things I could see: the pillow roses, the window latch, a butter-yellow mug, the crease in my jeans, a smear of sage on a card I had been painting.
By the time I got to one thing I could taste — leftover tea, honestly — my shoulders had remembered they belonged to me.
The method, chair version
- 5 things you see. Do not hunt for beauty. Name what is true. Lamp. Dust. River light.
- 4 things you can feel. Throw. Chair arms. Socks. The air on your face.
- 3 things you hear. A fridge. A bird. Your own breath.
- 2 things you smell. Tea. Soap. The throw if you lift it.
- 1 thing you taste. Water is enough. A mint. The inside of your own mouth.
Go slowly. If you lose count, start the line you are on again. This is not a test.
Why it helps when worry feels too loud
Worry lives in the future and the past at the same time. The senses only know now. Chair to chair support is often just a way back to now.
I still use this before I pull a card. It makes the sentence on the card land in a body, not only in a spiral.
A small affirmation
My senses know where I am. I can follow them home to this chair.
If it does not settle you
Some days the list feels silly. Some days it feels like the only rope. Both can be true. If you are in a place where you cannot stay safe alone, reach a local crisis line — see Help worldwide. You are not alone.
When you want a voice to walk it with you, the calm hub has the companion audio I recorded from this same seat.
Pull a card when you need it. I’m right here in my chair. Find your calm at https://mychairtoyours.com/calm
If you are in crisis, open Help worldwide and use the line for your country. Formerly noted: 988 for the Suicide & Crisis Lifeline. You are not alone.
